LONDON (AFP) - Former US vice-president Al Gore reiterated here that he does not intend to run for president in 2008 — though he did not entirely rule out doing so further in the future.

Gore, now an environmental campaigner, ran for president in 2000 against the incumbent George W. Bush, but lost the race amid a bitter dispute over electoral votes in the state of Florida.

He said: “I don’t have plans to be a candidate again and though I haven’t… completely ruled out any possibility of running at some point in the future I don’t expect to and cannot perceive circumstances in which I would.”

Ever since losing the 2000 presidential election, former Vice President Al Gore has been trying to educate the public on “global climate change” and its potential dangers.

He has toured the world giving his presentation on global warming, and in 2006 his presentation was made into a documentary called “An Inconvenient Truth.”

Gore has garnered a lot of attention for his controversial documentary in which he outlines how greenhouse gas emissions have caused the global climate to heat up and, if not addressed, could result in disaster.

The documentary was recently nominated for an Oscar, and last week Gore was nominated for the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize.

A stiff vice president campaigns on his administration’s legacy of unprecedented prosperity. Looks terrible on TV. Bows out, following a disputed vote count. Then, two terms later, with no incumbent in the race, he re-enters the fray. Promises to change the course of a disastrous war founded on lies. And charges to victory. I’m referring, of course, to the 1968 campaign of Richard Milhous Nixon. But four decades later, history has a chance to repeat itself for Albert Arnold Gore.

If the Democrats were going to sit down and construct the perfect candidate for 2008, they’d be hard-pressed to improve on Gore. Unlike Hillary Clinton, he has no controversial vote on Iraq to defend. Unlike Barack Obama and John Edwards, he has extensive experience in both the Senate and the White House. He has put aside his wooden, policy-wonk demeanor to emerge as the Bush administration’s most eloquent critic. And thanks to An Inconvenient Truth, Gore is not only the most impassioned leader on the most urgent crisis facing the planet, he’s also a Hollywood celebrity, the star of the third-highest-grossing documentary of all time.

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Consumer champion Ralph Nader, whose candidacy in 2000 may have cost Democratic nominee Al Gore the US presidency, said he was open to a possible run for the White House in 2008.

Nader, a veteran of three attempts at the White House under the Green Party and independent banners, told CNN television he had not decided yet but that he is committed to offering voters more choices than the two mainstream parties, the Democrats and Republicans.

“It’s really too early to say. I don’t like long campaigns,” said Nader, who will turn 73 this month, after being asked about the election to replace President George W. Bush next year.

“But I’m committed to trying to give more voices and choices to the American people on the ballot. That means more third parties, independent candidates and to break up this two-party elected dictatorship that is becoming more and more like a dial for the same corporate dollars.”

NEW YORK - Who says politics is show business for ugly people?

“An Inconvenient Truth,” Al Gore’s film on the perils of global warming, scored two Oscar nominations Tuesday — for best documentary feature and best original song.

While he is not technically a nominee — the film’s director, Davis Guggenheim, won the nod, as did singer Melissa Etheridge for the song “I Need to Wake Up” — Gore said he was “thrilled” that his movie was honored.

“The film … has brought awareness of the climate crisis to people in the United States and all over the world,” Gore said in an e-mail statement. “I am so grateful to the entire team and pleased that the Academy has recognized their work. This film proves that movies really can make a difference.”

Aides say the former vice president plans to walk the red carpet with Hollywood’s beautiful people at the Academy Awards ceremony next month.
